What is Psychosynthesis? Psychosynthesis is an approach to self-development that includes our spiritual as well as our physical, emotional and mental needs. Based on the work of Italian psychiatrist Roberto Assagioli (1888-1974), Psychosynthesis draws upon principles and practices from Eastern philosophies as well as from Western spiritual traditions, philosophy and psychology. Psychosynthesis holds that crises and confusion can herald the start of an inner journey of self-exploration. This process is regarded as healthy and hopeful even though it may entail periods of suffering and distress. Psychosynthesis views life’s difficulties as potentially life enhancing instead of labeling them as illness to be cured by someone else. Psychosynthesis is a way of understanding our lives, of helping us to know ourselves and trust in our own process of growth. The first step in the process is the attainment of a certain level of self-knowledge. When we enter into relationship with our inner life we find ourselves to be a mixture of contrasting, changing elements that sometimes seems in continual tumult. The essential task of Psychosynthesis is to bring clarity into this confusion through the process of integrating all the parts, aspects and energies of the individual into a harmonious powerful whole. Using methods such as creative visualisation, free drawing, training of the will, physical expression, writing and meditation, the Psychosynthesis therapist acts as a guide, to help us realize our creative potential, increase our ability to function harmoniously in the modern world and improve the quality of all our relationships.
